Izadora McGawley

High Tech High Chula Vista

Izadora McGawley is a senior at High Tech High Chula Vista.  She has been an active member of her project-based learning community since she began at HTH in the 6th grade.  She immediately became involved in the High Tech High student ambassador program and got to share her strong beliefs in what her school was doing to promote equity amongst their students and teachers.  As a sophomore in high school, she felt that one thing that was lacking in her progressive educational experience was a culturally responsive curriculum.  With her two closest friends she founded High Tech High’s first ethnic studies class.  She has been teaching and facilitating a faculty-approved ethnic studies elective since then and is now working with other educators to find ways to implement more permanent structures for culturally responsive pedagogy and ethnic studies within the High Tech High organization.

Iza is a proud 17-year-old woman of mixed heritage with roots in the San Diego Chican@x community.  From the love and support she was given by her family and community leaders, she is now able to feel empowered in her identity.  She hopes and feels obligated to spread this feeling of pride and empowerment to other young people of color as they work together in navigating the pursuit of social and personal progress.
